What are H and 2H pencils, and what are the differences?
As summer draws to a close, I offer the following notes-to-self that have been scribbled in my journal during the season.
The initial step in my garden design was to make many lists and collect a lot of data.It is time for pencils and paper to bring ideas into reality.Continue reading
A garden is constantly changing. The gardener does too.The climate also. After 3 decades of tending my lush and ever-bearing yard, it was time to re-think its current design. The only limits to my imagination were my time and physical ability.
The way I approach any architectural design project is with a progression of phases.
I have a head full of experience and opinions about this garden.
Over the years, the hardscape has been developed. It will remain the same.
Those that succeeded and those that failed have been noted. Some combine with others. It's easy to care for some. Some offer great rewards, such as long blooming time, delicious scents, beautiful colors, and/or striking texture.
Phase 3.daydream, and imagine possibilities.Start wish lists with the help of books and the internet. There are some of my lists.
Spring is around the corner.A picture of a tulip unfurling from the ground in front of my house got me thinking about spirals.
There are examples of ancient Ammonitida shells on this plate. They are complex and perfect.
M74 is a spectacular example of a grand design spiral galaxy.
There are many works of architecture based on the spiral.
The spiral staircase in Baker Hall is a variation of the timbrel vault type of construction.
Without posts or beams, it supports itself. The curve is lovely. The tile pattern along the curved underside is one of three layers of tile adhered together with fast-setting mortar. The shell is almost as strong as concrete.
It was built by the company of a Spanish master builder who excelled at designing and building arches, vaults, and spiral stairs.Unlike Roman arches and vaults, Guastavino structures don't require heavy wooden supports. The Guastavino craftsmen could start at the four walls of a room.It almost seems miraculous that the masons didn't have to build a wooden frame to support their structure while it was being built.Students at MIT are doing research on how these structures stand up.We can not build this staircase today.
The Guastavino's history, work and influence is explored in a great article in Humanities Magazine.
Palaces for the People: Guastavino and America's Great Public Spaces will be on view in the National Building Museum from March 16 to January 20.I would like to see it.
The first photo is mine, followed by the second, third, fourth, and fifth photos.
When I taught art in high school, I did an experiment in moving lines from the paper into the air.We drew insects and other small creatures in the library. We manipulated the lines with wire and pliers the next day.It was enjoyable.I put the unclaimed 3D line drawings on my mantle.
The 3Doodler 2.0 is a device that allows one to create lines in the air using moltenABS plastic, the stuff of Legos.
There are a lot of opportunities in the theory of this new toy. There is a learning curve in reality.I will have to internalize.
3Doodler is not going to make many practical, functional, or truly useful objects. You should not look for a legit 3D printer that can make useful objects.
If you like the idea of drawing objects in three dimensions, without having to jump over all the hurdles that lie between ideation and creation, then the newest 3Doodler should definitely be in your artist's toolkit.
I will be making some objects. They might be models of conceptual products. They are likely to be one-offs.Is that one-off?
The author of this review took a stand against this book's argument that drawing is no longer a viable tool for architects.
The Death of Drawing: Architecture in the Age of Simulation is a review.

My client chose dark green siding and black window trim for their bungalow. They were given options for the remaining trim and door colors.I made a short animation for fun.
