What are the black spots on crab legs, and is it safe to eat them?
We have caught many crabs from CA before, but never this one.The crabs were kept in the cooler for 24 hours with a towel soaked in sea water. One of them gave off a black liquid as I washed them off in the sink.He seemed okay after I washed it off. They were put in the fridge for another 24 hours to be picked after they were cooked. Many of them have this black liquid in their meat while we were picking them. After an hour and a half of searching, we found no answer to the question of whether the black liquid is toxic to eat.We have never seen a black liquid discharge with our crab.We have a couple suggestions for you.The California Deptartment of Fish and Game can offer an explanation about what the black liquid discharge is all about.Hopefully you will get a quick reply and an answer to this.We think you did the right thing by throwing out the brown crabs. We appreciate you trusting us to find out if there is something going on in the water or if you are throwing out good crab. We're sorry we don't have one.If you find the answer, please visit us again and let us know what you think.?
When I poked my crab leg, it had black dots on it.The worm was dead.I have never seen something like this before.Black spots on Dungeness crab, King crab and even Snow crab legs are most likely the result of naturally inter- acting will other crab.I have never had an incident where a worm was involved.I wouldn't eat it.Will you get sick?I don't know.No worm would get into my mouth when Enjoy!-ing crab.
The snow crab is bright orange.I have seen brown speckles, mostly brown shells, and black spots, but not sure why. The meat is usually more strong or salty. There are a number of possible factors and a mix of all of them, as well as natural pigmentations in the shell that don't come out until they are cooked. All crab shells, whether blue crab, dungeness, snow, or king, will have a different shade of color after boiling them.
I brought a dungeness crab and it had black on it.Whether it is bought at the store or caught fresh, it's not uncommon to find a lot of different colors inside the crab. This should not be of concern.I have found store bought crab have more "colors" inside than fresh crab. You can expect to see black, brown, green, yellow, and white from time to time. The true flavor of the dungeness crab meat may be adversely affected if the meat is discolored, but it's not a bad thing.Enjoy!
The crab legs and shell were black. It's hard to tell without a picture of what you're talking about.Where did you get this crab and what type of crab are you talking about? We don't have a lot of information to give you an answer.However...Many breeds of crab have been our experience in the past.King crab, Dungeness crab and even Snow crab have black spots on their legs and shells. We like to think of them as war wounds, the result of crab interacting with each other in a violent way.The good news is that we have never experienced any ill effects from this naturally occurring anomaly and have not found it to be detrimental to the quality of the crab meat found inside. If this is the blackness you are worried about then my best advice to you would be to enjoy!Got another question about crab?If you want to try some of our favorite Crab Meat Recipes, go to Crab chat.Treat your family to restaurant quality meals in the comfort of your own home by going to Crab-O-Licious.If it isn't fresh, it's not legal.
There are small black spots on the snow crab legs. The snow crab legs are still safe to eat.The shells have only been affected by the black spots. We believe that these are battle wounds.Crabs fight one another as they have preditors. You don't eat the shells and the black spots are probablybruises.Enjoy those legs! They look Crab-O-Licious to us.
