What is the difference between a primary and a secondary group?
A society is made up of different types of groups which vary in terms of their social interaction, degree of organization, range of group interest, size, and so on.The groups which are the main source of an individual's relationships are called primary groups. It has an intimate face-to-face association and cooperation.
The groups are formal, impersonal, contractual and specialized in nature. The interaction in a secondary group is usually on a less personal level than in the primary group.
The theory of Primary Group and Secondary Group was propounded by an American Sociologist in the year 1909.The broadly used concept relating to sociological groups was the basis for his classification of the group into primary, secondary and tertiary.
A primary group is bound together by a strong emotional bond and common interests. It gives the typical experience of social unity and harmony to its members. There is a contractual obligation between members. Both in size and area, it's very large and widespread.Depending on the condition, long term or short term.Specific Significance in the life of people is found in family and employment settings.
A primary group is a smaller group. It is characterized by close, personal, direct and long- lasting relationships. The group members care for each other and share a strong emotional bond. For a long time, they know each other well because they follow a similar culture and indulge in similar activities.
Primary Groups are named so because people come across these groups at an early stage of their life and they play a significant role in developing a person's identity.
A person becomes part of a group in his/her later life. There is less influence on personal identity by these groups.According to their interests and preferences, people choose such groups.Friends, colleagues, team, acquaintances, neighbours, and relatives may be included.
One can find such groups at the office, dance class, cricket association, clubs, school, university and so on.
These groups have a weak emotional bond. The group members don't have a lot of personal knowledge of each other.

A reference group is a model or ideal for defining an individual's attitude, behavior and evaluations. If a group of people try to join another group, that group becomes a tertiary group.
Every person in the society is a member of at least one group. One needs to learn the behavior of the groups in order to understand the society better.
