What is the difference between a Prompt and a Cue?

There is a difference between a prompt and a cue.Let's define before diving in.

Extra support that is added in the form of hints or reminders for a person to achieve success in a skill is called a prompt. The prompt is usually not related to the skill.

A cue is something in the environment that reminds the person to do a skill.

Your hand-over-hand support has nothing to do with turning on the light.Adding support to teach your child a new skill is a prompt. What if your child entered a dark room and turned on the light? The darkness of the room is considered to be your child's cue to turn on the light.

Prompts can be used to teach a new skill like washing your hands, eating with a fork, and doing laundry. The supports added to help the person learn are not related to the skill. Here are some examples of prompt types.

Pointing to the next step is a gesture. You can point to the light switch or tap it.

The model shows how to complete the task for the learner. You turn the light on and then back off.

The learner is being guided to do the task through touch. To flip the light switch, hand-over-hand.

The learner can do the task on their own without the help of the prompts.

When the learner sees the cue, they will complete the skill they have already learned.Think about the things you do every day.A plate or hand soap will remind you to grab a fork. The person and situation will affect the Cues.Let me show you another example.

There are a lot of ways to tell you to do laundry. The skill is related to all the cues.
