The only difference is the number of questions, time, and topics. Going the route of taking both ICND1 and ICND2 will consist of 80 to 100 questions; the CCNA composite exam is only 45 to 55 questions. The composite exam requires you to know all the topics on both the ICND1 and ICND2 exams.

Cisco will no longer offer the ICND1 exam, so there will be no new CCENTs from that date forward. More than that, ICND2 will no longer be available to CCENTs who want to step up to CCNA, so there's no longer an alternate path for existing CCENTs to step up to CCNA.
