What is the difference between NH, NST, and IPT?

I'm looking to purchase some online.I don't know if they will work together.
The Iron Pipe Straight thread is said to be named after it.It's meant to seal on a washer-shaped gasket, like the threads the hose for your toilet or faucets attach to.The reason you put pipe tape on the threads is to lubricate them and help them form a seal.
They won't thread together, even though I have no personal experience.I've been looking for something, but don't see anything.I think those arms would be designed to thread into a brass NPTF fitting in the wall/ceiling.

The left circled column is referred to as "IPS", the right is called "NPT".You can see that the outside diameter is very close and the TPI is the same.
Does the similarity mean you can get a liquid-tight seal screwed together?Absolutely not.It does mean that in some cases you can get a mechanical lock between the components.
