What is the difference between the martial arts of Kali, Eskrima and Arnis?
The Filipino Martial Arts is a tree with many branches. Some people don't know what the differences are between the arts of Kali, Arnis and Escrima.
The truth is that they are all part of the same organization. The Spanish term for fencing is Escrima/ Eskrima. Its influence came from the central part of the Philippines. The Spanish term for armour of the hands was used to refer to the warrior's ability to protect themselves with their weapon. We now know it to be, 'Arnis'.In the northern parts of the Philippines, the term Arnis was used for this FMA.In the southern part of the Philippines, Kali was a common phrase used in martial arts. These are all the same martial arts. There are many similarities between the masters of these arts. The differences depend on the instructor.
The differences between them are execution of techniques, stances, speed, weight, long sticks, and short sticks. There are more similarities than differences. There are train stick fighting, weapons defence, daggers and empty hand self defence techniques. Each emphasizes self defence techniques. One thing is for certain, the Filipino Martial Art is one of the best martial arts to watch, learn and use for self defence, no matter what name you choose to use.
