As the armies lined up to do battle, the men of Israel, under the command of a freshly appointed general, named Joshua, could have looked up at a nearby peak and seen three figures standing there overlooking the battle.No one had time to look when the first battle cry was heard.Israel began to take the upper hand when the middle of the three figures raised his hands over the battle.
The day wore on and the sun rose high and hot.The battle wore on and he was not a young man.The Israelites were immediately pressed by the Amalekites.They dragged a small boulder close for him to sit on and each took an arm and raised them over the battle.As they did this, the Israelite fighters came to Joshua and found strength and fear.
Throughout the day and into the evening, the two men supported the man.He lifted the people before God.The people of Israel won the battle.It was a day to remember, for it was the day that God showed them as a nation, that He fought for them, and that he protected and conquered on their behalf.
What does it mean for God to be our banner?When the altar is named, we know it's significant.We know it's for remembrance, but what does it mean for God to be our banner today?Consider how banners are used, and you will see what this title means.
They hang from the rafters of arenas.They were raised to honor soldiers who returned from war.They adorn public places to honor people.
Banners are to remember.Every year, towns across America raise banners on certain holidays to honor a patron, product, hero, tradition, or holy day.
Banners are signs.People can recognize names and images from a long distance.People can navigate to a business or event if they know the location and identity.
Banners are for people who raise them.An act of celebration, remembrance, or announcement is what they are.
Banners are for people who see them.They are a place to gather.They summon and call.They attract people.
You can see how God is the banner for all who believe, who are His followers, and who trust him with their faith.
Our banner is God because we live to celebrate and honor His faithfulness to us, from the rising sun to the risen Christ.We remember God's words and actions because they were graciously given to us in scripture.Our label is God's children because of the saving work of Jesus.God is our banner because we are his representatives to the world, making him visible and showing the beauty of his transforming work.All of this is an invitation, a summons, and a tug to any who would believe but do not yet know what that means or how to do so, which is why God is our banner.
When he built the altar, he was creating a place of remembrance, a celebration of victory, and an expression of thanks.He made a declaration that any follower of Jesus can share today: The LORD is my banner and we are the LORD's.It was a declaration of who God was as well as who He had done.
