What is the purpose of a Kufi?, and what does it mean to wear it?
Men in many parts of the world wear a cap that is short and rounded.Men throughout the African diaspora wear it.It's also known as a "tupi" in India.
A traditional hat for men in West Africa is a Kufi cap, which is part of the national costume of most countries in the region.Muslims and African Christians wear it.Many grandfathers and other older men wear a Kufi every day to show their status as wise elders, religious people, or family patriarchs.[2]
Within the United States, it has become identified with people of West African heritage, who wear it to show their pride in their culture, history, and religion.It is usually made of kente cloth, mudcloth, or knitted or crocheted in a variety of yarns.
A crown style hat is worn with formal West African attire.The crown style kufi is the most appropriate for non-formal occasions, while the knitted style is more suited for formal occasions.There are other caps worn with the dashiki, Senegalese kaftan, and grand boubou.
Many African-Americans wear the Kufi during weddings, funerals, graduations and Kwanzaa celebrations.Although it is associated with members of the Islamic faith more, people of mainly West African heritage wear the Kufi.
