Yes, I know many people do it. Rustoleum or other brand spray paint is easy and makes a nice look — for a short time. Even the ones with primer inside don't really give a quality, durable finish.

You need to scuff sand the entire area to be painted, enuf to dull the shine. Use automotive products and don"t use the cheap stuff if you want it to last and look good. Its not cheap by any means. I have painted for years and trailers are easy to do.
