When going out on your own, be confident and safe.
Going out by yourself can be frightening. Many people feel unsafe when they go out alone, whether it's on a trip or just to a party. It can deter you from having a good time if you feel unsafe. How do you go out by yourself and feel safe all the time?Read on to find out.
Step 1: Tell someone where you are going and how long you will stay.
This doesn't mean that you're changing your style. If you let a family member or friend know where to look for you, you're being smart. If you don't show up, leave a map for your friend or parent so they know where to look for you.Knowing that you have taken precautions can boost your confidence. Before you leave to meet your friends, call or text them to let them know you're on your way so they know something is up if you aren't there.Inform your friend or parent that you made it safely when you get there.
Step 2: If you are driving, make sure your car is in good shape.
If you're driving by yourself, you need to make sure that you have a spare tire in case you get a flat tire, and that your dashboard is not lit up before you leave. You should have an emergency service card with you, as well as a charged cell phone. Before you leave, fill your car with gas. It's a good idea to check to make sure everything is okay before you head out.
Step 3: There is a safe place to park your car.
Before you leave your car, think about where you parked. Is it easy to see from the street? If you're alone, this is the best place to park. You should not park in dark alleys or very far away from the door of your destination. It's important to remember where you parked.Take note of anyone on the street and map your way to the door. When you leave your car, make sure that it is locked and that you don't leave anything in plain view.Don't walk aimlessly, walk directly to the door.Lingering on the street can allow attackers to see that you are alone. If you can, keep anyone you saw on the street in your mind and in the corner of your eye.
Step 4: When you are on foot, walk down a well-lit path.
You should find the most popular, well-lit street even if you're not in a relatively safe neighborhood. If there's no one around, you're more likely to get robbed if you walk down a dark alley or in the middle of a dim street. It will be easier for you to see where you're going if you have a well-lit path.Don't check your text messages or listen to your head phones if you're on foot.Stay alert. An abductor is less likely to put you in his car if you walk in the opposite direction of traffic. It's a good idea to know where you're going. You will be making yourself an easy target if you check your phone's map app every few minutes. It's not a good time to stop at an ATM if you're alone.
Step 5: Learn how to defend yourself.
It's important to remember that you don't need a black belt in karate or a knife to take care of yourself, if you're confident you can.If you train your senses, you will be able to look after yourself and know if something is about to happen.Learn how to block punches or avoid harmful incidents if you travel or live in a dangerous area.Simple knowledge that you can protect yourself will increase your confidence, even though developing a more street smart attitude may seem pointless.
Step 6: Don't give too much information to a new person.
If she's the best friend of one of your best friends, you shouldn't give too much personal information to her, even if you just met her.Be on the look out.You came alone, don't mention that.Someone is picking you up if you are waiting for friends.Rather than giving out your home address or place of work if you meet someone you like, make plans to meet in a coffee shop, restaurant, or amusement park.Even in passing, don't mention where you live.If you want, you can give out your cell phone number.Taking time to really know this person and get a feel for the real guy or girl is the main idea.
Step 7: Be careful but not paranoid.
There are lots of good people. You don't need to be afraid that everyone is thinking about how to get one over on you because you're being careful.Don't be paranoid. There are more sunny days than days when lightning strikes. It's rare that lightning is dangerous.
Step 8: Let people see you having fun.
If you want to stay safe and not make yourself a target, have a blast, whether you're with girlfriends or alone.People will be less likely to take advantage of you if you look like a party animal. You will not have a good time if you don't relax when you're in a safe environment. When you reach your destination, resolve to have a good time, no matter what.
Step 9: If you're drunk, take a taxi.
You're it, there is no designated driver. You should be aware of what you are drinking.Do not leave your drink unattended. If someone buys you a drink, make sure you watch the bartender pour it.Don't get drunk if you suspect your drink has been compromised.Don't go home without calling a taxi or a relative to collect you if you get drunk. It's not a good idea to get too drunk if you're alone and someone will take advantage of you. It's okay if you're walking to meet friends.
Step 10: If you can drive home safely, walk back to your car.
Go straight to your car after taking a close look at the street.Alone.If the guard or bouncer is willing to walk you to your car, take them up on it.Let someone know that you're going home and ask them to watch you until you get in your car.If you see an alley between you and your car, walk in the middle of the street to give yourself plenty of room to move. When you get to your car, walk confidently, have your keys ready, and lock it up as you take your last steps towards it.As you approach the car do a quick visual check to make sure nobody is inside.Buckle up, get in, lock the doors, and drive away.Get going, don't sit in your car fixing your make-up or fiddling with your iPad or texting someone, get going.
