Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits were National lover's. The National was originally intended for Hawaiian and Jazz players but it became the favoured guitar of the great Blues guitar players. Beauchamp's patent caused a rift between the two parties and Dopyera left National.

There are many other small builders of resonator guitars in the US, including Meredith, Redline, Clinesmith, Fishook and others. Gretsch Boxcar Resonator Guitar I've had the Boxcar a little over two months and couldn't be more pleased. It is quite a small guitar; smaller than a 000 Martin. The Boxcar is loud, warm, and projects great tone. The build quality is superb; very solid (though light weight), very good fit and finish.
