The only major difference is caliber and number of rounds in the magazine. I shot a P226 for a long time and really liked it. I shot a P220 a couple times and didn't really like it. Both are great guns and it comes down to personal preference.

Probably a stretch for most pistols. My personal Sig P226 in 40 S&W held up for about 65,000 rounds before it experienced a frame rail crack. Sig warrantied it with a replacement gun, but said that at the service life of that pistol was at the upper limits.
