You are facing oncoming traffic.Unless you are going somewhere, a bike trail is not really safe.
It is safer for me to ride the same direction as traffic flow and hand signals are to do this.If you use your left arm elevated 90* like a "L" and your right hand elevated straight out towards the right, it can be used as a right signal. As a biker, most of the road rules apply to you so as you pass other bikers shout "on your left" well in advance and give enough time for them to respond. This applies when riding on sidewalks.Cars are supposed to yield to you because a car can hurt more than a bike.Between the curb and sidewalk area, always stay to the right between the solid white or yellow line.
Bike the same way as the cars. The right side of the road has traffic on it.
The safest way to travel is on the side of the road.If your back is to the oncoming traffic, you can't see if a car will go into your path. You will see traffic approaching if you are in the lane facing oncoming traffic.I do that when I walk with the kids.
You should cycle in the same direction as the traffic if you run on the side of the road.
