Both 3.5 and 5e only require basic algebra (ability modifier + bonus/penalty modifiers as variables + die roll) but 3.5, especially at higher levels, has a lot more modifiers to factor in (which may or may not stack with each other) plus various potential multipliers that may be calculated before or after other
Is DND 5e too simple?
No it is not. To say it's too simple means either there is some sort of objective standard for how complex a RPG needs to be, and there is no such thing. Or it needs to be too simple to do what is supposed to do. Which is also not true, 5e is the most popular RPG perhaps ever.
