Wonder: How 13-year-Old Nathaniel Found is a movie about a real-life 'Wonder' family.
The story of Auggie Pullman, a fictional boy with facial differences, is told in R.J. Palacio's 2012 book, "Wonder."
The book was inspired by an encounter Palacio had with a child. After her son saw the child and began crying, she pushed his stroller away to protect the girl from his reaction.
"It was terrible, and I was so mad at myself for the way that I handled it," Palacio said in an interview.I kept thinking about all the things I wish I had said and done.
She met the parents of Nathaniel, who was born with a rare disorder caused by a specific gene.
Nathaniel's family and Palacio spoke about the similarities between his life and his book.Russel Newman said she looked at Nathaniel with a look in her face.
Two years later, the Newmans have their own books, "NORMAL: One Kid's Extraordinary Journey" and "Norfolk: A Mother and Her Beautiful Son," coming out in January.
They wrote their own words about life as it is now.On Saturday, December 28, at 10 p.m., you can watch the full story.Time.
It's hard to believe that more than two years have passed since our show aired on ABC.Quite a few things have happened since then.
I attend a high school in Sammamish, Washington.I'm a big fan of the new game on the PS and I hope the movie lives up to the hype.
Along the way, I have picked up new interests.I like to play dungeons and dragons.I play a lot of games with my friends, such as Dungeons and Dragons, Fortnight, and even Grand Theft Auto.Working with my mother on a book about my life was the biggest news over the past two years.
R.J. Palacio encouraged us to write a book after we got to know her.We were able to make it happen once our life settled down. All the critical events that shaped my life were covered in "Normal", from my birth until my early teen years. The book was fun to write.Hilary Liftin is a writer and I would talk to her while playing with her dog.I chill in the pool with Hilary's kids while my mom worked on her book.
Since the show aired, I have not had to go to the hospital. The doctors at Seattle Children's did a great job and I really enjoy not having a tube anymore.I can swim whenever I want, I am taking taekwondo and I get to be like my friends and classmates.
Some classes are easy and some are difficult.I'm not the worst driver in the world because I just got my learner's permit.I'm just an average teen. It's nice to be able to say that after 70 surgeries.
Since Nathaniel's tracheostomy came out, our life has been ordinary.I am happy to report that he doesn't have to go to the doctors as often as he used to.Like Nathaniel, I visit my doctors once a year for regular check-ups.
Jacob is our younger son and he loves school and playing lacrosse. The past few years have not been easy on him, even though he hasn't had significant health issues. He had to learn how to deal with teen anxiety and depression.Jacob has received a lot of attention over the past two years.
I like to chaperone Jacob and Nathaniel to their many activities.Since we wrapped up filming for our first show, Nathaniel's life has changed the most.He got a permit to drive. This was like any normal parent's experience.I find myself hyperventilating when I sit in the passenger seat and watch my son drive. It gets better with every drive.
Nathaniel gets to enjoy the same physical activities as every other kid.He is about to start his training for a black belt after two years of practicing the martial arts.He is very proud of what he has accomplished. He was able to swim with dolphins and snorkel in Hawaii. He wouldn't be able to participate in these activities before his tracheostomy. It has brought my husband and I great joy watching Nathaniel grow and thrive as a normal teenager over the past two years.
