A garden swing is a great way to spend time outdoors. You can sit on it with a friend and sip lemonade, or you can take a nap on the blanket and a good book. The cost of garden swings can be high.Wouldn't it be better if you made your own instead of buying one?
Step 1: You can cut your pieces with a saw.
There are five 21-inch boards for the support joists. There are two boards for the front and back aprons. The boards for the back supports need to be 4 inches wide and 2 inches thick.
Step 2: Attach the support to the apron.
They need to be 1558 inches apart. The front apron should have the first and last support joists flush with it.First, drill 112-inch pocket holes, then insert 212 inch pocket hole screws. There are two pocket holes on each board. The jousts and apron should be on their backs.
Step 3: Attach the back apron to the supports.
You should have a piece of paper with three bars running through it.Use wood glue and 212 inch screws. After drilling the holes, coat both pieces of wood with wood glue.Attach the boards together with screws.
Step 4: You can add the back supports.
Attach them to the back apron. They need to be 1358 inches apart.Use wood glue and 212 inch screws.
Step 5: You need to cut your pieces.
You will need two long boards for the arm fronts. You will need two boards for the arm rests. The boards need to be 4 inches wide and 2 inches thick.
Step 6: The arm fronts should be attached to the apron.
Attach each arm to the apron. The apron's bottom edge should be aligned with the arm front.Again, use 212 inch screws and wood glue.
Step 7: The arm is on top.
Make sure the back of the arm rest is level with the front.Make sure the arm rests are flat.Attach them with wood glue and 212 inch screws.
Step 8: Cut slats.
You need six boards that are 72 inches long. Each board has to be at least 6 inches wide and 1 inch thick.
Step 9: Attach slats to the back rest.
The arm rests should be positioned above and below the slats. The arm rest should be flush with the bottom of the slat.Use wood glue and finish nails.
Step 10: Seat slats are added.
Attach the slats to the supports. There are 12inch (1.27-centimeter) gaps between them. The arm fronts should be flush with the first slat. The back supports should be flush with the back slat.Use wood glue and finish nails.
Step 11: If necessary, smooth out the wood's surface.
Wood filler is used to fill in holes. If you sand it with the wood grain in mind, it will be smooth.Dust can be wiped away with a damp cloth. It's a good idea to apply primer if you're going to paint your swing.
Step 12: You can stain or paint the swing.
You can preserve the natural texture of the wood by applying a wood stain. If you want to give it a solid color, paint it with outdoor quality paint.Apply the paint or stain according to the directions on the can, as each product will be a little different. You may need more than one coat. Before applying the next coat, be sure to let the previous coat dry.
Step 13: You have to seal the swing.
The varnish should be waterproof and outdoor quality. You should apply three coats to your swing. Before applying the next coat, allow each coat to dry. It's up to you whether you use a glossy finish or a matt finish.Even if the paint is labeled waterproof, it's still important to seal it.
Step 14: Right between the arm front and back rest is where you should attach eye bolts.
All the way through the joust, drill the hole first.Put a washer over the hole. All the way through the board, twist the eye bolt. There is a bolt on the other side of the beam.Take the nut and twist it.The looped part of the bolt needs to be oriented in a certain way.The swing should be shaped like an "O" when you look at it from the front.
Step 15: Feed the rope with the hooks and tie.
Cut two pieces of rope.Feed the rope through the hooks on the left side.Feed your second rope through the hooks on the right side.On each side, tie the ends together with a knot. The rope needs to be at least 200 pounds.
Step 16: Attach the swing to a sturdy object.
Make sure the swing supports the weight.Heavy duty swing hangers or eye screws can be used to hang the swing from the rafters. If the swing is tippy after you hang it, you should add more eye bolts and ropes. It is better to hang it at a slight backward angle.
