You can use a paint booth to create clean and smooth paint jobs for your projects. If you want to build a booth in your garage, try making a frame out of plastic, duct tape, and pipe. You'll need a box fan and filters. You can make a booth that will handle spray paint cans and guns.
Step 1: To figure out the dimensions of your paint booth, measure.
How big your booth needs to be depends on your project needs and the size of your garage. An 8-foot (2.43m) wide paint booth can be used for a garage or a large patio and will fit a full car inside. An 8 by 4 feet will be large enough for most other projects.A single-car garage is usually 9 to 10 feet across, but can be as big as 12 or 14 feet.
Step 2: To figure out how much pipe you need, sketch out a frame.
The back wall and both sides of the frame will need vertical supports. It will need horizontal pieces all around the top, as well as in the back and on the sides. For the example project, you'll need 9 10 feet of sections of pipe with a diameter of 1.2 inches. It's sturdy enough for most projects. There are sections that are 10 feet long.
Step 3: Determine how long of pipe you need to make your booth.
The sides should be divided into 2 sections at the top.The middle pole should be divided across the top of the booth into 2 sections.Take into account the height of your garage when determining the booth height. The poles for height will be divided into 2 sections. How long do you want each section to be?The most important thing is that the parallel pipes are the same. The sections you need are as follows.
Step 4: You'll need to cut the points on the pipe.
Measure out the pieces you'll need.To cut on each piece, use a permanent marker. Before you cut it, lay out your pipe.
Step 5: According to the marks you made, cut the pieces to length.
The pipe should be secured in a small workbench with 2 planks on each side as a vise or table-mounted vise. You can use a pipe cutter to cut through the pipe with a saw. While applying light pressure downward, slide the saw back and forth.Rub the ends of the pipe with a block.
Step 6: Lay out the pipes.
There are 3 pipes that meet at the corners. You will need small sections to attach the T connectors to the elbows.Pick the pipes that have most even ends. There are 4 posts at the corners that touch the floor. The top of these posts will be formed by laying out 2 more in the front on each side. The 3 8-foot (2.43 m) sections go along the top horizontally in front and back, while the 5-foot, 11 /4-inch section goes vertically in the middle.
Step 7: Attach the T and elbow to the corner pole.
The front corner is where you should start.Place a T-connector on top of a 3-foot (0.91) m, then use a small piece of pipe in the joint that extends toward the front.Attach a piece of pipe to an elbow. The front pole will be supported by that. The smaller sections that will form the top of the poles in the back should be done the same way.If possible, ask for help with assembly.
Step 8: The corner posts should be built with T connections.
On the front, connect the top to the bottom with the opening facing the back of the booth. There is a small piece of pipe in the back that can be used to connect 2 T connections. One should face the front and the other the back.
Step 9: The sides can be built using the corner posts.
The front corner pole needs to be connected at the top. Then add a 20-inch section. The other end of the section should be put into the back corner pole.To connect the front pole to the back pole, place a section across the middle of the side. You can find it in the middle of the side. You can connect an elbow joint with a small piece of pipe. The other side should do the same.
Step 10: The sides should be connected with the poles.
If you want to build a post for the middle of the booth, you can slide a section into the bottom of a T connector. There is a section on either side of the connector. The smaller sections should be pushed into the middle of the walls. The 8-foot sections are in the front, the back, and the middle. All the poles need to be put in place before you can fully secure these joints.
Step 11: Put the pipe into the joint.
It is very difficult to break a pipe with your bare hands, so apply plenty of pressure to ensure a tight fit.Press the pipe into each joint. To get everything connected tightly, you may need to twist the pipe slightly.
Step 12: There is a piece of plastic over the whole booth.
Place it so the piece goes up one side and down the other. To cover it, draw enough to the back.Pull the pipes about 1 foot (30 m) over the front.
Step 13: Wrap the plastic around the back.
If you have them, use the clamps to hold the plastic in place.Cut the plastic along the corner pole straight up from the bottom of the booth and make sure it is even. The corner pole has plastic around it.Put the tape over the plastic and pole if you're having trouble sticking it.Go through the plastic and tape on the pole's inner side.Go through the hole with a zip tie.Attach the zip tie to hold the plastic in place.
Step 14: The plastic is in the back.
Cut the piece of plastic from the side to the corner in a straight line. You can seal off the edge of the plastic by taping it to the pole. The other back corner should be done the same way.The corner of the plastic on each side should have a large square cut out of it.They should be saved for the front.
Step 15: Attach the front of the plastic to the tape.
Pull the overhang taut and tape it to the poles in front.Attach the pieces of plastic you cut out of the back to the poles with tape. The whole front should be covered by this.Use tape to seal off the seams.Seal the opening between the 2 sheets at the top and bottom.Close this seam tightly when you get in the booth to paint. You may need to get another sheet of plastic to cover the front if the plastic doesn't cover it.
Step 16: Drop cloth is 4 by 15 feet inside the booth.
The corners should rest on the legs of the paint booth.Push out any bubbles to make it flat.Lift the paint booth's legs one at a time to push the cloth edges under them.If the cloth doesn't line up under the paint booth's legs, you should inspect the legs. The legs should be close to the ground. As needed, adjust.
Step 17: Put the plastic on the inside.
It should be taped to the corners of the booth.Attach the plastic to the drop cloth with duct tape and use strips to seal the seams. This will hold the cloth in place.
Step 18: There is a structure for a box fan.
Place a box fan high enough to clear the middle pipe of your paint booth by using a small stepladder, cardboard boxes, or other temporary structure. The structure should be positioned on the other side of the booth. If necessary, place the structure so that it is at least 1 inch from the middle pipe. The legs of the ladder will be covered by plastic.
Step 19: A hole is needed for the fan.
You can trim a hole that's close to the size of the fan at the height you have it.Wrap the plastic around the fan with tape.Extra plastic is needed to make sure you get a tight seal.
Step 20: The inside of the booth has a fan.
Positive pressure is when you blow air in and let it out.If you pulled air from the paint booth through the fan, you could cause a fire.
Step 21: The back of the fan has a furnace filter on it.
You don't want to blow dust into the booth, so find a filter that's the same size as the fan.Duct tape is used to seal it to the back of the fan.If you prefer, you can do the opposite. You can put a filter in the side of the booth instead of behind the fan.The fan should be facing toward the filter.
Step 22: There is a furnace filter in the plastic.
Cut a hole in the plastic that is large enough for the filter to fit.To seal the edges of the plastic, tape it in place.Run the fan when using the paint booth.
Step 23: You should replace your filters every now and then.
Overspray and paint dust will eventually fill the furnace filters.Pull up the duct tape or cut it out with a blade when the filter is changed.Don't cut the plastic if you're using a blade. It would be helpful to add the new filter with a different color duct tape each time so you know which tape to use.
