It can be difficult to get a parakeet to bond with you, but you can get the bird to come around with a little patience. You can establish a loving relationship if you spend time getting your parakeet comfortable with you.Follow these guidelines and your parakeet will love you again.
Step 1: Make your budgie comfortable.
The cage is a safe place for your parakeet, but you want him or her to be in the presence of your family so they are used to seeing and hearing people.Budgies need up to 12 hours of sleep per night and this is a place where the bird can rest. When your budgie sleeps, cover the cage to block his or her vision and keep drafts at bay.
Step 2: You should get closer to your budgie.
Once the bird is comfortable in his or her cage, it's time to get closer to it each day.Move slowly so as not to frighten your parakeet. When you are near the cage, talk softly to the bird.Don't move suddenly. The more time you spend near the cage, the better. You will know that your parakeet is there. You are essentially the bird's flock, with which he or she would spend all their time in the wild, so the more time you spend with your budgie, the better.
Step 3: Start touching the cage with your hand.
Don't move your hand if it moves away; instead, keep it there and talk to the bird or read a book. The aim is to get the bird used to you.Don't scare the bird.
Step 4: You can approach your budgie from inside the cage.
When your parakeet doesn't move from your hand, it's time to open the cage.Rest your hand inside the budgie's cage for a while. If you hold a treat, it's even more effective.A treat helps the bird trust it.Slowly, you will be able to move your hand closer to your bird.If you hold a treat in your hand, your parakeet will eat it.If your budgie can't reach the treat in your hand while on a perch or the side of the cage, he or she will most likely jump onto you to get it.
Step 5: Place your parakeet on your finger.
After a while of feeding the bird on/from your hand, try to get your budgie to perch on your finger without food by nudging it against their belly near the feet.Don't overwhelm the bird, as your parakeet may jump off your finger quickly.Continue to move slowly and give him or her some time.Over time, your bird should start getting on your finger.
Step 6: Take your budgie out of its cage.
The next phase of hand training involves getting your bird to leave the cage and perch on your hand.Your parakeet may jump off your hand near the exit if he or she feels safe inside the cage.Just like when you tried to get him or her to eat from your hand, keep trying.Once your budgie learns to trust you, he will be able to come outside the cage with you.
Step 7: It's a good idea to talk to your parakeet a lot.
When you pass by your parakeet, stop and talk to it.If you repeat the same phrases or noises when you talk to your bird, he or she may start saying them himself or herself.Similar to other pet birds, parakeets can talk.Talking to the bird can translate to a loving budgie.
Step 8: Try petting your parakeet.
As a member of the flock of parakeets, your budgie may like it if you gently rub or stroke his or her feathers in different places.Try rubbing his or her belly or scratching her head.
Step 9: Always handle your parakeet with care.
Budgies are small and delicate. If you take it easy when handling your budgie, you will have an even more trusting pet, which can translate to a loving relationship with your bird.Don't hit or do anything rough with your parakeet. If you want to kiss your budgie on the beak, don't do it in small concentrations of human saliva.
Step 10: Fruits and vegetables, seeds and pellets are some of the foods you can feed your budgie.
A full bird is happy when it isn't bored of the food you give it.You can give your budgie seeds, pellets, fruits and vegetables.Natural pellets have no colorings or added sugar.Feed seeds separately from pellets. Some foods to avoid are avocados, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, chocolate and more.
Step 11: You should give your parakeet a lot of toys.
Parakeets play a lot, so toys will keep them happy.Give them shiny toys.
Step 12: You should keep your budgie's cage clean.
Budgies like a clean home.Budgies live in close proximity to their droppings.Keeping their cage clean helps keep their bird nice and healthy. You should get good perches for your parakeets.Your budgie gets exercise when you bring him or her out of the cage with the help of perches that are different in diameter.
