All students need to write persuasive essays. The thesis statement must be included in each essay.A thesis statement is your main point.Writing a thesis statement involves answering the main question and doing some research to make sure your thesis can be backed up.
Step 1: The teacher has given an assignment or task.
You need to know the type of essay, its length, format, topic, purpose, parameters, and structure.Whether you have an assigned topic or a more general topic, your first step is to distill the assignment topic into one question which your thesis statement can answer.Think about your assignment. What are you going to write about? Then ask the question you can answer. If you are assigned a paper or report on the benefits of wearing a seatbelt, make it into a question you can answer. The answer to this question is the beginning of your thesis statement.
Step 2: The topic should be the focus of the development.
A good thesis gives a concise and arguable point of view.Make sure you have a clear and defendable position on your topic in your thesis. Is your topic an argument, an explanation, a personal description, or a book analysis?Knowing what kind of paper you are writing will help you make a good thesis. If you're writing a paper about World War II, you should include the same attributes in your statement.A thesis statement answers a question. It is your interpretation of the subject. It should make a claim that other people can disagree with. One main idea that can be developed to cover all parts of the assignment is what your thesis should express.
Step 3: Think about what you want to say.
It is advisable to research the topic in order to develop your point of view.Pick something that interests you.If you are given a broad assignment like a paper on The Great Gatsby, or a more specific topic like the benefits of wearing seatbelts, you need to explain it clearly. You can adequately speak about your topic if you break it down into an argument. If your topic is about the benefits of seatbelts, you have many points of view to explore.Since seatbelts became required, there has been a decrease in fatal accidents. You can discuss the laws about wearing your seatbelt in the back seat.Your argument is that seatbelts save lives. Before writing your thesis, consider a variety of viewpoints. It is possible that seatbelts don't provide any new benefits. This side may be more difficult to argue against in a broad area. You may want to get more specific because there may be a lot of information against you.You could argue that seatbelt technology hasn't improved safety in a long time. There is more information on the advancement of other vehicle safety measures than there is about seatbelts. You have to find an angle that you can argue about or what intrigues you about the book if your topic is even broader. After reading the book, you may have become interested in the causes of the Great Depression. The required length of your paper will dictate how specific your topic is.If you have a longer paper, you may want to explore a topic broadly, but for a shorter paper you need to be very specific.
Step 4: Come up with a question to answer.
Asking a question is a great way to come up with a thesis statement. The monetary pride and dichotomy of old and new money depicted in The Great Gatsby led to the Great Depression. This isn't your thesis statement yet.You can have a starting opinion and main idea with this argument. You want to take a stance that is reasonable. You should be able to create a conversation with your thesis even if you don't agree with it.
Step 5: Think of a single sentence that expresses your point.
What would you say about your idea?Finding your point of view is how you have begun to do this.Your argument is not fully formed yet.If you have enough credible information to back your idea up, then you should do a little research after you come up with it.There is not enough information to argue that seatbelt technology hasn't improved enough. There isn't enough information to give a counterargument. You read about front and rear seat seatbelts. You decided that backseat passengers should be required to wear seatbelts.Depending on the region, seatbelts are not always required in the back seat. There is enough information to explore this topic. You can argue your point of view by writing down a few different sentence options.Try to make a different point each time.If you are writing about a broader topic, like your book report on the Great Gatsby, you could say: "Not wearing your seatbelt in the backseat increases the risk of serious injury by X percent."In the context of your paper's requirements, you may not find enough factual correlation to support your topic. You need further research to support or change your argument.
Step 6: There are a few sources to back up your argument.
You should gather some sources that give you enough information to write about before you waste time writing your thesis statement. You can find crash and safety statistics if you argue that seatbelts should be worn in the back seat. Both sides of the argument can be argued in articles.Research the causes of the Great Depression if you are writing about the themes of consumerism and pride depicted in The Great Gatsby.Do more research to find out if other people have the same argument. You can see how similar topics and articles relate the story of The Great Gatsby to the Great Depression.
Step 7: You can write a "scratch" sentence.
Make sure it's a complete sentence. It can't be a question or an announcement of your purpose. If you have enough information to back up your thesis, it is time to go back to what you wrote before.Maybe your research gave you a new idea.Backseat passengers should be required to wear seatbelts at all times, but this doesn't fulfill all of the requirements of your thesis. You haven't fully answered your question despite having a solid argument. The question still needs to be addressed. To back up your statement, look through your research.
Step 8: Make sure your sentence is strong.
A test.It must include evidence that supports your opinion. If someone reads your sentence, you want them to respond. It doesn't provide an argument yet that someone can really contest "backseat passengers should be required to wear seatbelts at all times."Get specific with what you mean.backseat passengers should be required to wear seatbelts at all times due to the fact that X percent of unbelted passengers being ejected and fatally wounded in car accidents. The same applies to your book report. The monetary pride and dichotomy of old and new money depicted in The Great Gatsby led to the Great Depression. The Great Depression was caused by the fear of muddled class systems and the pursuit of the American Dream, which was depicted in the book, "The Great Gatsby".It passes the "So what?" test because you have outlined a controversial point of view which presents an interpretation of the literature.
Step 9: If you read over your sentence one more time, you will see if it answers your question.
It is important that your sentence states the topic, your opinion, and that it doesn't wander.Getting more specific in your thesis can cause you to wander as you try to incorporate everything you want to say.An outline for the body of your paper is what your thesis is about. There is no need to include every detail in your thesis. It should give a good overview. If your original question is "What are the safety benefits of wearing a seatbelt?", read over your current thesis and see if it still answers that question.Your current thesis doesn't exactly answer this question, so it's time to revise it again.According to our current statement, the Great Depression was caused by the fear of muddled class systems and the pursuit of the American Dream depicted in The Great Gatsby.
Step 10: Make sure you have an arguable point in your thesis, that is not a general fact or a personal opinion.
The thesis needs to be presented in a structured way.Your thesis is a statement that others may disagree with.In your essay, you will show why you have this point of view.Make sure your argument hits on the topic of your question.Revising your seatbelt thesis to say that increasing seatbelt laws will provide further safety benefits by reducing the percentage of deaths in vehicle accidents.
Step 11: There is a balance to be struck between being vague and specific in your thesis.
A large statement will require a lot of pages to support.A highly specific idea may not have enough evidence to back it up.The Great Depression was caused by the fear of muddled class systems and the pursuit of the American Dream, which was depicted in the book, the answer to your question is slightly broad. The themes of wealth disparity in American royalty, and pursuit of the American Dream presented in The Great Gatsby depict a parallel to real-world consumerism and excess which led to the Great Depression.A thesis statement can be broken up into two sentences.
Step 12: Make sure that your thesis covers the assignment.
After you have compiled evidence, revised and come to a specific stance, read over the assignment again.Make sure you can write a paper with your current thesis in mind.If your assignment was to discuss the benefits of seatbelts, ask yourself if your thesis can cover the criteria.Increasing seatbelt laws to include mandatory buckling in back seats will provide further safety benefits by reducing the percentage of deaths in vehicle accidents. You narrowed it down to a specific aspect of seatbelt safety. You answered how your argument will discuss the benefits of seatbelts.
Step 13: Make sure you explain your ideas in a way that supports your thesis in your essay.
You should be able to provide enough evidence throughout your essay to back up your claim if you have already done some research.Make sure you have fulfilled all the criteria before you start your paper. Are you able to answer a question?Do others have the right to challenge or oppose you?Is your thesis specific?Does it pass the "So what?" and "how and why?" tests?Take a break and revise if your thesis doesn't meet the requirements. You can come back with a better angle after taking a step back.Don't feel like you have to compromise your paper to fit your thesis as you write your essay. If you need to revise your thesis in your essay, do so.
