Adding lattice beneath a porch or deck can give it a new look.Storage space beneath your deck or porch can be created with lattice. There are areas that are ugly such as the floor joist or posts. It is relatively inexpensive to install lattice.
Step 1: Remove the lattice with a pry bar.
Don't damage the porch, deck, or support columns when removing lattice. If you can't remove the lattice with a saw, cut it into pieces. It will be easier with this. You can use a cat's paw to pry off small nails. If the lattice is stapled, you need a screwdriver with a blade just wide enough to fit on the staple.Remove it gently.
Step 2: It's a good idea to make sure nothing is living under your porch or deck.
Make sure there are no animals on your deck before you install new lattice.Allow as much light in as possible if you find animals.Next to the deck, let your water hose run.The animals like dark, dry, and quiet areas to nest in and this will encourage them to leave.Don't use traps or poison as it may kill non-target animals or kill an animal in an unreachable place. You may be able to find a group that will help relocate animals.Call your local fish and game office or city animal control to find out more. You can hire a professional wildlife removal service if you can't find a volunteer.
Step 3: The lattice requires materials to make frames.
The frames will be attached to the house after you screw the lattice to them. It's important to use rust-proof hardware.
Step 4: Determine the dimensions of the lattice frames.
Take a look at the openings between the columns and posts. The frames should be 1 inch shorter than the openings and 1/2 inch narrower. If you put the lattice flush to the ground, it can cause problems.
Step 5: Four perimeter pieces are needed for the lattice frames.
To cut lumber to a length of 4 1/2 feet, use a circular or jigsaw.
Step 6: Each frame has a center stile.
The shorter edges of the frames can be cut using 1-by-4 inch lumber.
Step 7: The frames should be assembled.
Put the frame pieces together.Attach the mending plate and flat corner brace to the frame.Attach the hardware from the edges of the frames using flathead screws.Make sure you put the frames together on a sturdy surface.
Step 8: Attach the center stile to the frames.
Make sure the plate is centered on the support piece by using two 4-inch T-plates.The T-plates should be positioned from the edge of the frame. The screws should be used to secure them.
Step 9: Use a circular saw to cut the lattice panels.
The frames should be face down.Attach a piece of lattice to each frame using screws. There is a gap between the edge of the frame and lattice. When the weather changes, the lattice expands and contracts. The lattice will not be buckled.
Step 10: Place the seam between the lattice pieces.
Two pieces of lattice will form a seam.Pan head screws with washers are used to hold the lattice panels together.Attach two rows of screws to the lattices.
Step 11: 3 or 4-inch strap or T-hinges can be used to attach the framed lattice panel to the porch or deck.
The lattice frames need to be screwed first.
Step 12: Place the panels under the deck or porch.
Step 13: The lattice frame needs to be raised so it is tight against the porch or deck.
Attach the hinges to the porch or deck with a drill and screwdriver.
Step 14: Make sure the lattice frames are shut.
If the lattice frame drags on the ground or doesn't close all the way, use a shovel or garden hoe to remove some of the dirt in front of and underneath the frame.Add more dirt if there is too much space beneath the lattice frame. The ground will be flat if the dirt is distributed evenly.
