Canaries are a low-maintenance bird. They will be content if they have fresh food and enough room to fly.If you only have one canary, you need a large cage with all of the basic necessities of life.Encourage them to get lots of exercise by giving them food and water once a day.
Step 1: Buy a large cage.
A good canary cage will allow them to fly back and forth. You should get one that is at least 16 inches tall and 30 inches wide with bars that are 2 inches apart. To give the bird room to fly, it should be wide and long.Do not buy ornamental cages. There isn't enough space for the canary to fly.Iron or powder-coated steel can be used to make a metal cage.
Step 2: There is a place to put the cage.
If you want your canary to not get lonely, find a room that is frequently occupied. The cage should be against the wall or in a corner away from any windows, doors, air vents, or drafts.A family room, home office, or dining room is a good place.Don't put the cage in the kitchen. In the same room as the cage, do not use sprays, air fresheners, furniture polish, scented candles, cigarettes, or other fragrances.Don't put the cage on the ground. It should be close to the eye level.
Step 3: The cage should be lined with bedding.
Newspaper lining and cob bedding will help you clean up bird droppings. The cage should be kept clean by replacing the newspaper or bedding every day. It's a bad idea to use cat litter or wood shavings as cage liner.
Step 4: Put some perches in place.
There is a place for your canary to fly and roost. They will be active and happy if they have two perches in their cage. There are perches between 8 inch and 19 inch in diameter. The tree branches make great perches. The perches are in the cage.To maximize their room to fly, place them at opposite ends of the cage.
Step 5: Put food, water and a bath in the dishes.
For food, water, and a bath, canaries will need three dishes.Droppings might fall into the canary's perches if the dishes are put under them.
Step 6: Feed your canary a varied diet
A varied diet of seeds, pellets, fresh fruit, and leafy vegetables is required by canaries. The canary mix is usually found at pet stores.Give them a small amount of this mix every day. There are some good vegetables and fruits for the canary.Attach the cuttlefish bone to the side of the cage.Your canary is going to eat these for calcium and minerals. It's a bad idea to feed canaryavo to birds.
Step 7: They should replace their water daily.
Canaries need fresh water. The bowl should be taken out of the cage once a day.Warm water and soap should be used to wash it.Before refilling with fresh water, rinse it well and dry it with a towel.
Step 8: They should clean their cage once a week.
The cage needs to be cleaned every week. The canary should be put in a carrier. The entire cage should be emptied before it is scrubbed with hot water and soap. All of the dishes should be washed. Before putting them back in the cage, let everything dry.The dishes should be washed every day.
Step 9: The cage needs to be covered at night.
Canaries are sensitive to the sun.If there is a light in their cage, they may stay awake. After the sun goes down, place a blanket or cover over the cage.
Step 10: Look for signs of sickness.
Canaries have delicate lungs and can be prone to parasites. If your canary shows signs of sickness, take it to a specialized vet.fluffed, ruffled, or thin feathers, squinting, discolored feces, discharge around the eyes or beak are some of the common signs of sickness. The database at the Association of Avian Vets can be used to find a local vet.
Step 11: They need a few toys in their cage.
Give your canary a few items to play with.Canaries are fond of swings and can even play with sticks from trees.
Step 12: They should be allowed to fly in a room.
You can open the cage door to let your canary fly around. After that, bring them back to their cage with some fresh food or treats. Before they can fly out again, close the cage door. Before releasing your canary, close all doors and windows. The canary shouldn't fly into the windows and mirrors. Before letting the canary loose, turn off all ceiling fans.
Step 13: Males should be taught to sing.
If you only have one canary, you will need to teach them to sing on their own.Use nature videos to teach canaries how to sing.Sometimes female canaries can learn to sing.Females only chirp.
Step 14: Do not handle your canary.
Canaries don't like being held by humans. When you need to clean the cage or check for illness, limit your handling. The canary is happy watching and singing to you.
