Get a firearms license.

If you're in the business of buying and selling guns, you need to get a Federal Firearms License.As long as you meet eligibility requirements, the process of obtaining one is straightforward.You can get your Federal Firearms License in less than 2 months with a little preparation.

Step 1: Determine if you are eligible for an FFL.

You need to be licensed if you buy or sell guns frequently with the goal of making a profit.You must be at least 21 years old to get a Federal Firearms License.Further eligibility criteria can be found on the website of the ATF.Some people don't need an FFL.If you are liquidating a personal collection, you don't need a license.You can find more examples of situations in which you don't need a license on the ATF website.

Step 2: Obtain the ATF form.

You can get it online here: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/form-7-7-cr-application-federal-firearm-license-atF-form-531012531016/download.You can get the form by contacting the ATF Distribution Center.

Step 3: You need to fill out Part A of the form.

Provide the name, address, and activities for which the FFL is required.There are 9 different types of FFL described on the form.All local, state, and federal regulations will be met by your business.For dealers in firearms other than destructive devices, type 1 is the most common license type.

Step 4: The Responsible Person Questionnaire is part B of the form.

Personal information can be entered, such as your name, age, address, and SSN.If you've ever been convicted of a crime, answer a series of yes or no questions about your eligibility for an FFL.Each person has to fill out a Part B questionnaire.Anyone with the power to direct the management and policies of the business that is being licensed is a responsible person.The only responsible person is the sole proprietor of the business.A responsible person is a partner in a partnership.All of the company's managers are listed as responsible persons.

Step 5: Get your fingerprints taken.

The Form 7 must be accompanied by a card.You can order this card online or by phone.Your fingerprints will be stamped on it at your local law enforcement authority.The license application needs to have the fingerprints of everyone on it.There is an ORI block of the card.

Step 6: You should include a photo of yourself that is 2 by 2 inches.

The picture must have been taken in the last 6 months.Your whole face must be seen.Don't wear a hat.Print your full name, last 4 digits of your SSN, and address on the back of the picture.A photograph is required for every responsible person on the application.

Step 7: Send the appropriate fee with your application.

You can pay by check, credit card, or money order.Cash and post-dated checks will not be accepted.FFL licenses cost from $30 to $3000 for 3 years.The most common license type is type 1.You should make a copy of your application.

Step 8: You can mail your application package to the ATF.

Your fee, your photograph, and your fingerprints should be included.The envelope should be addressed to The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives.The box is located in Atlanta, GA.

Step 9: You can submit a copy of the application to your local CLEO.

The Chief Law Enforcement Officer is the Chief of Police, Sheriff, or the equivalent in the place where the business is located.Drop it off in person or mail it.

Step 10: Wait for a background check to finish.

The information in your application will be recorded and checked for correctness by the Federal Firearms License Center.They will conduct a background check on everyone listed in the application.After the background check is over, your application goes to your local field office.

Step 11: Prepare for an in-person interview

An IOI will interview you.You will be contacted by the IOI to arrange a time to meet that works with both of your schedules.Make sure that your application information is current and correct.Understand federal, state, and local laws for your business.If you own a business, make sure that you have a lock on the entrance and the storage location of your firearms.Investing in a gun safe is a good idea to make your application stronger.

Step 12: You can attend the interview at the business premises.

The IOI will discuss federal, state, and local regulations with you.The two of you will go through your application together to make sure that everything is current and correct.The premises of your business will be inspected by the IOI to make sure you meet safety standards.The longest part of the interview is likely to be about laws and regulations.The IOI will make a recommendation to approve or deny the application.

Step 13: You can receive your FFL in the mail.

Your FFL will be sent to the premises of your business if your application is approved.The process can sometimes take longer, but you should get your FFL within 60 days.If it's taking longer than usual to get your license, call the ATF.
