How To Change a File Type Using Windows

Are you confused by all the strange sounding words that are "Computerese"?Is it lucky that you know where to turn it on so it doesn't catch fire or freeze up?Instructions for simple computer tasks can be found here.This "How To" will show you how to change the file type of a project if the one you want to use is a.gif type and the project won't accept it.

Step 1: Use your mouse to click on the file you want to change.

A drop down menu will appear after it highlights the file.You can find "open with" by looking down the list of options.

Step 2: You can find a comparable program.

There is an option to "BROWSE" as well as a list of programs.Take a look at the list and see if there's an option called PAINT.If it is not, click the "BROWSE" option and it will open up a popup where you can search your computer for a program.You can put it into the list of programs you can send your file to once you find it.If you click it, it will send your file to "Paint" program, which will open it for you.

Step 3: Click on the option "FILE" to open the Paint program.

Clicking on theSAVE AS option will take you to a drop down menu.

Step 4: There is a popup at the bottom.

There are two lines that can be used to change the file type.The one that will be used first is the last line.To get the file type options you need, you have to click on the dark space at the end.There are different types of file types you can choose from the drop down menu.

Step 5: The options have a line that says.JPG.

Don't let that confuse you because it might include other letters there as well.You need the one that is in the line with the rest of them.You can click it.The blank line will place the choice you made into it.

Step 6: If you want to make a new folder for this file, look at the top of the popup, and make sure you are saving it in the same place it was originally.

There is a possibility that this is not the case.It's time to do that as well.

Step 7: Your new file will be going to the destination that you are sure of.

Simply place your new file type into the line above it.
