A gaping waistband can be found in many pants. The added problem of showing too much skin is what makes gaping waistbands uncomfortable.Attaching an elastic band to the waistband of your pants is an easy way to fix a gaping waistband.Attaching a small piece at the back of the pants can be done with the elastic. You can either pay to have professional alterations made or wear a belt.
Step 1: Your pants should be turned inside out.
You will need to turn your pants inside out to change the size of your waistband.Alterations to the pants will not be visible when you are wearing them. All sewing will be done on the inside of the pants.
Step 2: Take a measurement of the waistband.
Measure the width of the waistband when they are inside out.To use an elastic that is less than the width of the waistband, you will need to use 1/2 centimeter (14 inch) or less.
Step 3: The opening should be cut from the button hole.
You will need to cut an opening for the elastic to be inserted.Make a vertical cut from the button hole to the other side of the waistband. The inner layer of the waistband needs to be cut.To make a small cut, pinch the inner layer of the waistband.Don't cut any closer than half a millimeter from the edges of the waistband. You shouldn't cut the edge of the band.
Step 4: The length of the elastic is measured.
Measure the elastic's length before you put it in.Wrap the elastic band around your waist to see where the waistband of the pants sit.Pull the elastic tight to hold the pants onto your waist. To save the measurement, create a mark on the elastic.
Step 5: The elastic needs to be cut.
You will need to subtract the length of the elastic from the measurement.Measure across the front of the pants from the one cut you made in the waistband to the other.Cut the elastic using scissors after subtracting the measurement.
Step 6: The elastic should be guided through the waistband.
Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and insert it into a hole you made in the waistband. The safety pin should come out of the other hole if you guide the elastic through the waistband. You can pin the end of the elastic to the waist band if you want to avoid pulling it all the way through the waistband.
Step 7: The opening should be closed.
Take the end of the elastic and put it into the jeans. The elastic should fit into the button side of the hole. The elastic should be close to the incision made on the sides of the waistband. The hole should be closed using a thread that matches the color of the pants. You should sew over the elastic in order to secure it.There are two holes that need to be closed. If you are working with thick fabric, use a thicker needle.
Step 8: Cut a strip of elastic.
You can sew a small strip of elastic into the back of your pants if you don't want the look of an elastic waistband. In a less noticeable way, this will help to cinch in your waistband.A 1 12 inch wide strip of elastic can be cut.Depending on the size of your waistband, the length of elastic will vary. The elastic should be half way between the center belt loop and the side belt loops of your pants.
Step 9: Put the elastic in the back of your pants.
The elastic should be at the back of your pants when you turn them inside out.Pin the elastic to the pants. To mark the location of the belt loop, place a pin on either side of it.
Step 10: The elastic has to be put on the waistband.
Begin near the center of the elastic and use a zigzag stitch. You need to sew through the center of the elastic.Pick the zigzag stitch you want to sew on your sewing machine.Pull the elastic tight and let the material of the pants feed through the machine. The sewing process starts on the other side of the center belt loop and goes towards the elastic side.As you are sewing, remove the pins.Don't sew over a pin because it could break your needle. The thread should match the color of the pants.
Step 11: You should wear a belt.
A belt is an easy way to fix a gaping waistband.A belt will hold your pants in place. They can add flair to your outfit. You can purchase different types of belts. They are in different colors and materials.Pick a belt that matches your look.
