How to install a vertical shiplap wall with pictures and instructions.
The laundry room is small. While we were making some changes, I wanted to give it a bit of a "WOW" factor with a pretty feature wall.
I can't believe it took us so long. This was the perfect place to try it out.We decided to do a vertical shiplap wall in my favorite shade of aqua instead of the traditional white one.
There are ways to make a faux home.We decided to purchase pre-primed shiplap to save ourselves from having to rip down larger boards since we were doing a small wall.
I read on my friend's website that she regretted not painting her boards ahead of time. She said it was difficult to get into the crevices between the boards to paint.
Donnie was worried that if we painted the entire board, we would end up messing up a lot of the paint. We took a middle ground.
We didn't have to get down into the crevices after we painted the edges of the boards. We wouldn't have to worry about messing up the paint during installation because the middle of the boards was clear.Win-win!
Just a heads up...There was a different size lip on the side of the board. We would end up with a small gap between our boards if we installed them on the side with the larger lip.The boards would sit against each other if we installed them on the side with the smaller lip.
It affected which side of the board we needed to paint as we were painting the edges. It's something you'll want to pay attention to during installation so that your boards are level.
After the edges of our boards were painted, it was time to cut them to size for installation.Donnie used a saw.
The washing machine water supply was one of the obstacles we had to work around with our shiplap boards.
To mark the area we wanted to keep clear, we traced around the cover plate with a pencil. The plate could be reinstalled after the house was done.
Donnie used his Fein Oscillating Multi-Tool for these cuts.
If needed, an oscilating multi-tool can make plunge cuts in the middle of the house.A miter saw can't do this.
It was time to install the boards after they were cut to the correct specifications. There are many ways to stick to the wall.
Liquid Nails were used to adhere the boards. If you attempt to remove the boards, Liquid Nails will most likely ruin your house.Liquid Nails can be used if you are installing vertical shiplap as a temporary wall treatment. We were fine with this method because we don't plan to remove our house anytime soon.
If we used horizontal shiplap, each piece would have multiple contacts with wall studs, and we would choose a different method that did not involve Liquid Nails. We didn't have the option of attaching most pieces to a stud because we went with a vertical installation.
The use of furring strips attached to the wall is an option for vertical shiplap installation. The furring strips would be attached by the shiplap. Some situations would work well with this method. The furring strips would've added too much depth because our wall had the washing machine supply lines. It would have required us to change the depth of the plumbing and electrical outlets.
Liquid Nails was applied to the back of the shiplap after a section was cut.We pressed it against the wall.
To make sure we achieved a snug fit, we used a block of wood and rubber mallet to tap each section into place.
We used our nail gun to make sure our vertical pieces weren't going anywhere. We used a brad nailer. The brad nailer makes sure that the shiplap doesn't move as Liquid Nails dries.
A piece of vertical shiplap would align with a stud when we got lucky. We had to anchor that piece to the stud.
The distance between the floor and the ceiling isn't always uniform across the wall.As we worked our way down the wall, the gap slightly widened. We don't recommend cutting all of the wall at the same time.It may be difficult to fill large gaps at the end of the project.
We were almost able to finish the project with a full piece as we worked our way left to right down the wall. There was a gap that required just a small amount of material. The notch section was removed with the help of the multi-tool.We used this piece to fill the gap on the right side of the wall.We were able to keep the correct spacing and end up with an even look.
We were ready to patch and caulk after our pieces of shiplap were nailed to the wall.
Our boards were left with holes that needed to be filled after we used our nail gun to adhere the shiplap to the wall.
We filled the holes with wood and used a painter's tool to remove any excess. We used an orbital sander to make sure everything was smooth after all the holes were filled. It wasn't obvious where the nail holes had been after we painted.
Sanding the boards left some dust behind, so we wiped them down with a damp cloth to get rid of the dust layer.
caulk was used to create a smooth transition between the edge of the board and the walls after patching was complete. We caulked at the top of the boards next to the ceiling.
We caulked these edges by running a bead of caulk down the edge.We used a finger to smooth it out.
After the vertical shiplap was patched and caulked, it was time to paint the boards. We wanted a smooth paint line between the white wall and ceiling. We taped off the edges of the house.
The space between the bottom of the shiplap and the baseboard was very small. It would have been difficult to tape it off.We cut in with a paint brush at the bottom of the boards.
The detail work on our wall was done with a paint brush. There was space around the edges of outlets and at the top and bottom of the boards. We used a foam roller to paint the rest of the wall.
We used a small brush to touch up the paint after it dried. Our feature wall was finished.
We worked with shiplap for the first time.It gave us the look we were going for.I don't know if I will look for other ways to incorporate it into our home.

I'm looking forward to seeing your finished laundry room.I've been gathering ideas for our laundry room for a while now, and may use some of yours.I have been saving up for a while because I will need to hire an electrician to move light switches, which will allow me to hang a new light.I really like the one you chose.
