How To Make a Floral Headdress

The ultimate accessory for any music festival, garden party or outdoor wedding is a floral headdress. If you want to make a statement, you can create your own unique floral headdress after selecting your flowers and greenery.

Step 1: You can choose the flowers for your headdress.

Visit a florist, grocery store, or any retailer that sells flowers in your area and choose the flowers you want to use to create your floral headdress.Depending on the size of the flowers and bunches they are sold in, you will need 1 to 2 bunches of your main flowers. The main flowers set the tone for your headdress and make the biggest statement, so keep in mind what color scheme and vibe you are going forDepending on the occasion, you can use real or fake flowers.Pick one flower for your headdress, or mix it up with 2 or 3 options. There are a lot of flowers that can hold up well on floral headdresses.

Step 2: Find flowers that complement your main flowers.

Small flowers can be used to fill in dead space on a floral headdress.Adding filler flowers is a great option if you want to add more color and interest to your headdress.Baby's breath, poms, and statice are great options for flowers.Depending on the size of the flowers and the bunches they are sold in, you will likely need 1 or 2 bunches of filler flowers.

Step 3: Go for greenery at the base of your headdress.

greenery adds interest to your floral headdress. If you want to hide the florist wire base of your headdress, greenery is helpful. Some greenery options are ivy, eucalyptus, and ferns. These plants are easy to wrap around the florist wire base with their long and bendable stems.

Step 4: Use measuring tape to measure your head.

Wrap the measuring tape around the back of your head and across your forehead. To mark where the tape meets, wrap the measuring tape around your head and hold it between your fingers. You will need to refer to this later on, so you may want to write down your measurement.Make sure that you don't hold the tape too tightly or the crown is too tight when you wrap it around your head.

Step 5: You can cut the floral wire with scissors.

Line up the measuring tape to your florist wire after you have measured your head.Attach 2 inches to the length, then use scissors to cut the wire.Adding 2 inches to the length of the florist wire is necessary in order to connect it into a circular crown.

Step 6: The wire should be in a crown shape.

Wrap the green florist wire around your head after you have measured and cut it.Put the extra 2 inches in length between your finger and thumb and hold it together. To adjust the shape of the wire, use your fingers on the other hand.Since you will be adding flowers and greenery, leave a little bit of wiggle room so that the crown doesn't get too tight with the floral additions later on.

Step 7: The florist wire needs to be secured in a circle.

While maintaining your hold on the overlap ends, remove the florist wire after you have molded it to fit your head.Wrap the ends tightly with florist tape, then replace your fingers with the tape.Thin craft wire can be used to secure ends.Cut a piece of craft wire to 2 inches to 3 inches.Attach the section with the craft wire.

Step 8: Cut the stems.

Use scissors to cut the main and filler flower stems from the base of the flower head.It is important that you leave enough stem to attach the flowers to the wire crown. You will be able to trim the stems later on.

Step 9: The flowers should be arranged in small bunches.

One or two of your main flowers, along with a few of the filler flowers (about 1 to 5 depending on how big your flowers are), should be gathered together. These should be separated from the rest of the flowers.Continue this process until you separated your flowers into small bunches. If you end up needing all of your flower bunches, it is helpful to have them separated and arranged to your liking. You don't have to stop and make more as you go, they will be ready to go as needed.

Step 10: The bunches should be secured together.

Wrap floral tape or craft wire around the stems to secure them.Wrap the stems around until they are fastened together. If you need to trim later, leave a little room at the bottom of the stems.

Step 11: Attach your greenery to the wire crown.

If you are using a long type of greenery, such as ivy or eucalyptus, you can easily attach it by cutting it about 2 inches longer than your florist wire crown and wrapping it around it.The greenery should be secured by covering the excess 2 inches with floral tape or thin craft wire.Attach the leaves individually if you are using a shorter type of greenery. You can place each leaf where you want it on the florist wire crown and hold it in place with your fingers.Wrap the stem and florist wire together with florist tape or craft wire to secure it to the crown.Continue until all your greenery is attached. It is easier for you to nestle your flower bunches amongst the greenery if you attach your greenery first.

Step 12: Attach the flowers to your headdress.

Pick one of the pre-arranged floral bunches.Put the bunch on the crown with your fingers and decide where you want to attach it.Wrap the stems and wire together with florist tape or craft wire to secure the bunch to the crown.Attach all the floral bunches you need to achieve your desired look.Attach the floral bunches one by one and stop to take a quick look at the crown so that you can adjust the placement as you go.

Step 13: Extra stems should be trimmed.

Scissors can be used to clip off stems that are sticking out.Don't cut the flowers or florist tape that hold your crown together.
