It's not always possible to depend on the weather to give you what you want. There are many ways to make fake snow, whether you're trying to liven up a decorative diorama or turn your front yard into a winter paradise. If you're throwing boiling water into freezing conditions, you need to take the necessary precautions.
Step 1: Check the weather to see if the water will freeze.
If the water is colder than 30 F, it will freeze instantly. You can find the weather on your local news station or online. You'll need to wear a thick coat, pants, and a hat if you're going to be exposed to the low temperatures.
Step 2: The water should be boiled on the stove.
Don't use more than 2 litres (0.53 US gal) of water because you will need to be able to toss it in the air.Put your water in a pot and heat it on the stove. The water should boil after a few minutes. The stove should be used with the supervision of an adult.
Step 3: Carry the pot outside by holding it in both hands.
A friend or parent may be able to open the door for you so that you can get outside quickly. The water may not work if it stops boiling before you get outside. The boiling pot is going to be very hot and you don't want to spill it.The pot should be held with two hands. This will allow you to steady the pot as you walk.
Step 4: You can make snow by tossing a pot of water into the air.
While still holding on to the pot, throw it away and let your arms go down. When it's windy, be careful about doing this because you don't want the water to hit you.The water will turn into snow if the temperature is cold enough and the water is still boiling.
Step 5: If you can create enough snow, make a snowball.
The snow that you create is real snow. You won't get much snow with boiling water, but you may be able to get a small snowball.
Step 6: 3 cups of baking soda is enough to fill a large bowl.
Put your bowl on a stable surface and pour baking soda into it.If you want to make fake snow, you'll have to do a lot of mixing, so choose a surface that is easy to clean. You can put a large towel under your bowl to make it easier to clean.
Step 7: Attach the hair conditioner to the baking soda.
You can use any brand of hair conditioner, but keep in mind that the color of your snow can change. If you're trying to emulate classic snow, make sure the conditioner is white before you use it.If you're buying conditioner specifically for this process, read the label on the back. There are any dyes or colors that hair conditioners use.You can use a spoon to scoop out thicker hair condition from the bottom of the measuring cup.
Step 8: Put your ingredients in a large spoon.
If you want to catch any bits of baking powder that haven't been exposed to conditioner, you need to remove your spoon from the bottom and sides of the bowl.It will take a bit of effort to pull the spoon through the baking soda.Baking soda will become fluffy and easy to pull apart after a few minutes of stirring. To stir your ingredients, use a clean spoon. When stirring it, mix it thoroughly with your hands.
Step 9: You can give your snow an extra shine by adding glitter.
You can mix glitter with your baking soda and hair conditioner. This will make your fake snow look like real snow in the sunlight. It's difficult to clean up glitter. If there will be younger children around, this is not the best idea. You should have your fake snow for at least a few hours. It's probably not a good idea to store it for a long time.
Step 10: You can get the components from a hardware store or online store.
You need a pressure/power washer, compressor, and a snow-making nozzle to make snow. You may be able to purchase a pressure washer and compressor at a local hardware store, but you'll likely have to buy the snow-making nozzle online from a specialty shop.Attach your nozzle to a compressor and power washer with the appropriate adaptors.
Step 11: The snow-making nozzle needs to be connected to the pressure washer.
Attach the nozzle to the end of the power washer extension hose. The opening is typically 22 millimetres in diameter and should fit automatically, but you may need to use an accessory to match the threading between the nozzle and the pressure washer.
Step 12: Attach the air hose from the compressor to the snow-making nozzle.
The air compressor will have a spigot at the bottom.Attach the air hose to the spigot. The 4 inch (0.64 cm) hose is what the spigot should be fitted for.
Step 13: Attach the garden hose to the power washer.
Power washers have a port for a garden hose, and they work by pumping water through a narrow opening.Attach your garden hose to your pressure washer by fastening it to the spigot. The portable power washers use a tank system. They can't be attached to a garden hose and snow-making machines need a constant flow of water to operate correctly.
Step 14: The pressure washer should be turned on when you turn on the air compressor.
First turn your air compressor on, then use your pressure washer. There should be water coming out of the nozzle.Check to see if there is a ball valve or shut-off switch that prevents water from coming out.If you want the snow to accumulate before you turn it on, angle your nozzle to a fencepost or tree branch. As the temperature of the water is adjusted, snow will start to accumulate.
Step 15: The snow machine should be used in the proper weather conditions.
The snow maker won't work if it's warm or humid. If the humidity is higher than 50%, you should only use the snow maker when it's 28 F.Outside of these conditions, you'll just be making slush.
Step 16: Allow snow to accumulate by leaving your machine on.
Even if the texture and quality isn't what you're used to, a snow maker is still making authentic snow.If you want a lot of snow to accumulate on the ground, you can leave your snow maker on for hours at a time.It will take just as long to melt as normal snow.
