Hard disks are used for storing computers' data and operating procedures.The process of removing the data from these disks is called re-formatting.If you can't figure out what's wrong with your PC, it may be necessary to change it.It's a good idea to reformatt your computer to wipe it clean and fix issues caused by viruses.
Step 1: First, consider using an anti-malware program.
This could help your PC performance.You may want to consider re-installing Windows.This won't remove all the files if you're trying to eradicate a virus.After re-installing, the virus may still be present.
Step 2: Check to see if your PC has a restore-disk.
Most brand name manufacturers include a disk that can restore your computer to the state it was in when you bought it.Some only include a disk, and others don't give anything at all.If you have a restore-disk, you won't have to change your computer.
Step 3: You can either write the instructions down or print them out.
You will not be able to access files on your computer when you begin the process.You can reference the steps and procedures in a printed copy.
Step 4: You should back up your data.
All important data should be backed up.All hard disk data will be lost when you reformat.There is an article about how to backup your data.You should save the backup to a CD, thumb drive, or external drive.It's a good idea to note whether you have the software CDs for extra devices.If you downloaded them, you should be able to re-download them or backup them so that you can use them again.You should note the make and model of your devices.From the start menu, you can find these by searching for device manager.Clicking on each category will show you what devices are installed.
Step 5: You can put the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer.
You can also use the setup disks.You will have to install each disk if you use the disks.
Step 6: It's time to restart the PC.
This will begin the setup program.
Step 7: When prompted, press any key to boot.
Soon after the power-on self test, this prompt will appear.At the Welcome to Setup screen, press the Enter key when the CD loads.
Step 8: The F8 key is required to agree to the Microsoft end user license agreement.
Since there is an existing installation of Windows, you may get a prompt to fix it.The disk can be formatted if you press the esc key.
Step 9: Select the field that doesn't say unallocated space.
All of your partitioned and non-partitioned spaces will be listed on the screen.The keys are used to select fields to be deleted.
Step 10: To remove a field, press the D key.
Press the L key when prompted to confirm partition deletion.There is old data on the hard drive.
Step 11: "Unallocated Space" is the last field left after steps 6 and 7.
To create a new partitioned space, press the C key after all the partitioned spaces are deleted.Press enter to create a new partition.
Step 12: The new partition can be selected using the arrow keys.
The unallocated space is where Windows XP will be installed.A list of installation options will follow.
Step 13: Pick Quick Format installation.
You should select the NTSF file system.The preferred file system of Windows is that one.If you want to recover from error, you need to do a full format.
Step 14: When the PC restarts, you should choose your language and local preferences.
You can click on custom settings to get more options.
Step 15: Enter the password you want.
You can enter your password when the administrator password prompt comes up.Pick a password that is hard for anyone to guess.
Step 16: Your backup can be contained on your disc or thumb drive.
Before you start this procedure and re- install your applications, you should put your backup in the right drive.
Step 17: Go to the "Start" menu.
The lower left hand corner of the screen is where this is located.Pick "All programs" and "Accessories" to restore your backup.Choose "System Tools" and "Backup"Click "Next" to continue when the backup program is opened.
Step 18: You can restore files and settings.
Click "Next" to continue.You can find your backup in either the CD or the thumb drive by clicking on the "Browse" button.
Step 19: To mount your backup, click "Finish".
It could take some time to restore if it was a large backup.When the restoration is complete, click "Close".The files from your backup should show up on your computer.
Step 20: Try running a memory test on the PC if the CD won't complete reformatting.
If there are many errors, you may need to replace one or both of the memory sticks.
Step 21: It's possible to replace the optical drive and data cables.
Over time, some cables may need to be replaced if they are damaged.
Step 22: You should check your CD drive.
If your computer can't read the CD, try another one.You may need to replace your CD drive if it can't.
Step 23: The CD should not be scratched.
Look at the CD in the light when you flip it over.Your CD drive may not be able to read it if the CD is scratched.If you can't fix the scratched CD, try a different CD.
