How To Season Cutting Boards

Wooden cutting boards give you a safe and sanitary surface to chop up food on.Even though cutting boards are sturdy enough to last many decades, you need to condition the wood periodically to ensure longevity.Rub a large amount of mineral oil into the wooden surface of your cutting board after it has been washed, deodorized, and sanitized.Allow the oil to penetrate into the wood for several hours before you can use the board again. The wooden cutting board can be used for a long time.

Step 1: Warm water and dish soap can be used to clean the board.

The sink has no wooden board.Rub the entire surface, edges and handle of the board with a gentle dish detergent after washing up a sponge or dishcloth.Rub away any food particles that are visible in the wood crevices. After rinsing the soap, pat it dry with warm water. If you put your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher, it can warp and crack.Set your cutting board aside so it can be washed by hand.

Step 2: The board should be dry for several hours.

The cutting board should be kept in a place where it can receive adequate air circulation.Don't use the board until it's dry to the touch.

Step 3: It's a good idea to sanitize and deodorize your cutting board.

Purchase a spray bottle of sanitizer for hard surfaces if you want to pour a small amount of white vinegar into it.Ensure that all surfaces are wetted by spraying the surfaces moderately.Wait for a few minutes and then rinse the board with cool running water.Follow the directions on the bottle. If you have a more worn out cutting board, you might need to do this more often.Stores that sell commercial sanitizers include supermarkets, large retailers, and home improvement stores. If you don't like the taste of vinegar, try soaking the tip of a paper towel in hydrogen peroxide and blotting the surface of the board.

Step 4: Before putting the board back in storage, let it air-dry.

You can put the board on a towel. You should leave it there for 2 to 3 hours to make sure it's dry before you put it in the kitchen.

Step 5: You should season your board at least once a month.

If you use your cutting board frequently, schedule a time to condition it.You need to set aside several hours so the board can dry.Set aside time weekly to oil and dry your wooden cutting boards if you are an avid chef.If you only use your cutting boards once or twice a year, you don't need to worry about seasoning them frequently. It is time to season the wood if you notice water in it.

Step 6: The cutting board needs to be on a flat surface.

It's a good idea to put your board in the kitchen. You don't want to season a dirty surface if the item is already washed and dried.A pot lid holder is a good place to keep your board. This will make it easier to control the oil.

Step 7: Put some mineral oil on the board.

A small pool of liquid can be poured onto the wooden surface from a bottle of kitchen-grade mineral oil.You can either put the oil on the board or put it all in one place. You can always wipe away excess oil if you use too much.Coconut oil has a lot of saturated fat.Do not use vegetable or olive oils to condition your board. They will become rancid and make the cutting board smell bad.If a member of your household has a nut allergy, walnut and almond oils should not be used.

Step 8: Rub the oil into the sides and edges of the board.

Rub the mineral oil into the wood with a dish towel. As you go, use sweeping motions. The front and back of the board should be rubbed with the oil.The dish towel is the same as the cutting board. You can wipe off excess oil from the top of the board later.

Step 9: For at least three hours, perch the cutting board on its edge.

If necessary, place the wooden board against a hard surface. If you wait at least 3 hours before checking the cutting board again, the mineral oil will have time to soak in and condition the wood. You can wait up to 6 hours to check the cutting board. If you have a pot lid holder, you can place the board vertically in the container.

Step 10: Remove the excess oil from the board.

The dish towel should be used to remove mineral oil from the wood.Store the item in its usual spot if you let the cutting board dry overnight. You can start conditioning the board on a regular basis if you remember the date you season it.
