Hair, soap, grease, food, and oil are some of the things that can cause sink traps and drain pipes to malfunction. You will need to clean the sink trap.If you have a mild sink trap problem, you can use a baking soda solution or a plunger. To clean your sink trap, you may need to remove it.
Step 1: There are sink stoppers that need to be removed.
If your stopper has a pivot rod, you will need to remove it.The pivot rod goes into the drainpipe if there is a locking nut under the sink.Remove the nut and the rod. Then screw the nut and rod back in place.Attach the dishwasher drain hose to the kitchen sink. The bendable drain line needs to be tightened before you plunge.
Step 2: To clear obstructions, use a coat hanger.
If you want to find a piece of wire, take a metal coat hanger.Attach the end of the wire to the small hook.Use the end of the hook to pull out clumps of hair, paper, or other obstructions from the drain.
Step 3: Pour boiling water into your drain.
The water should be brought to a boil. The other half of the water should be put down the drain. For a later use, reserve the other half.
Step 4: Start by filling your sink with water.
If your sink is filling up, place a plunger over the drain entrance. When you fill the sink, make sure the plunger is completely submerged in the water. The water will get to the sink.If you have a double sink, you will need to cover the other sink's drain with a wet rag or another type of cover. If you plunge the other drain, you will prevent water from leaking out of the sink's drain.Pick up a small plunger from a hardware store if you don't want a tight seal around the drain in your small bathroom.
Step 5: You need to pump your sink.
If you want to do this, move the plunger up and down for at least 20 seconds.Pop the plunger off of your drain to create extra pressure on your final upstroke. This will help clear the sink trap.
Step 6: If required, keep plunging.
If the water in your sink whirls down your drain, it's time to clean the sink trap.If you don't, you will need to keep plunging. The water will whirl down your sink if you repeat the plunging process.
Step 7: Pour the boiling water into your drain.
The water may need to be re-warmed.The water should be boiling again.Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and stir it with a spoon or spatula.Put the water in the drain. The boiling water will clear the sink trap.Grease and oil can be removed with the dish soap.
Step 8: Bring the water to the boil on the stove.
Put your pot on the stove. The water should boil for about 10 minutes.
Step 9: The boiling water should be poured down the sink drain.
To use the remaining water, reserve it.
Step 10: Baking soda can be poured down your drain.
Baking soda should be set for 10 minutes. If your drain is blocked, you may need to set it for 20 to 30 minutes. Before you do this, make sure to remove the sink stopper.
Step 11: Take 1 cup of hot water and mix it with 1cup of vinegar.
The water you boiled should be used. When you mix the two together, make sure they are well combined.
Step 12: Put the mixture down the sink drain.
To prevent the mixture from bubbling out of your drain, cover it with a plug or wet towel. The mixture should be set for 10 to 15 minutes. The mixture may need to be set for 30 minutes if the sink trap is very bad.
Step 13: You should rinse your drain.
The rest of the water should be put down the drain. This will help remove the dirt from the sink trap.If the water has cooled, heat it to a rolling boil and then pour it down the drain. The sink trap may need to be removed if the sink is still blocked.
Step 14: Find the sink trap.
Look under the sink for a pipe with a curve. This is the sink trap.Between the tail pipe and the waste pipe is where the sink trap is located. The waste pipe goes to the wall, while the tail pipe connects to your sink.
Step 15: Place a bucket under the sink trap.
A gallon bucket or a dishpan can be used to collect water. As you remove the sink trap, the bucket will be used to catch dirt and water.
Step 16: The slip joint nuts need to be removed.
Remove the slip joint nuts from each end of the sink trap. You can either use your hands or a wrench.Continue to untighten the nuts with your hands once they are loose. If your sink trap has a metal finish, use a strap wrench to loosen the slip joints.Duct tape can be placed on the parts of the wrench that come into contact with the pipes.
Step 17: The sink trap must be removed.
You need to locate the O-rings as you remove the sink trap. One should be on each side of the J.They should be placed somewhere safe. The O-rings are used to seal the connection between the sink trap and the waste pipes. Before you disassemble the sink trap, take a picture of it.You can prevent sewer gases from entering your home by gnashing the waste pipe.
Step 18: You should rinse the sink trap.
To rinse the sink trap should be taken to a separate sink or outside. The trap needs to be cleaned thoroughly before it can be put back together.
Step 19: The sink trap has a brush.
As you scrub the sink trap, you can use a dishwashing detergent. The sink trap needs to be cleaned. The bottle brush can be used to clean the end of the tail pipe as well.
Step 20: Remove the trap.
First place the slip joint nuts on the waste pipes.Return the O-rings to the pipes. The sink trap should be between the waste pipes. The sink trap has slip joint nuts over it.To tighten the slip joint nuts, use your wrench. The slip joints should be tightened a quarter turn more.Don't tighten them too tight. This can cause your pipes to break. If there is rust on the P trap, it is time to replace it.
