Instructions are included below that will help you decide how low your tablecloth should extend.Depending on the length and width of the table, you can measure it either as a circle or a rectangle.
Step 1: When using the tablecloth, shrink or extend the table to the correct size.
If your table has leaves that can be used to change its size, decide what size is best for you.If you want a day-to-day tablecloth, keep the table the normal size.It is possible to measure the table when it is extended to its maximum size, if you are looking for a formal tablecloth to use when entertaining guests.Pick a tablecloth that hangs no more than 6 inches (15 cm) over the edge of the table if you want one that will fit your table at any size. The tablecloth may look different when the table is smaller.
Step 2: Measure the table's length.
You can use a tape measure to measure the table in either direction. If your table is oval in shape, measure in the center of the table, not along the outer edges. As you make your measurements, write them down.
Step 3: You can measure the width of the table.
At right angles to the first, measure the other horizontal dimensions of the table.Measure near the center of the table. It's important to make this measurement even if your table is square, as it can be difficult to tell a square and rectangle apart.
Step 4: Determine how far you want your tablecloth to hang down.
A tablecloth hangs below the surface. The drop length of most dining room tablecloths is between 6 and 15 inches.A tablecloth intended to hide table legs can reach all the way to the ground. To visualize which drop length you prefer, hold a piece of fabric or paper downward from the table's edge. When you would use this tablecloth, place your chairs and other furniture objects where they would be located.
Step 5: Determine the length and width of your tablecloth.
The tablecloth will hang from both ends of the table. If you add this result to your table's length, you can get your ideal length and width. If your table is rectangular, you can purchase a rectangular tablecloth.
Step 6: If you can't find the exact size, get a slightly larger tablecloth.
If you don't want to buy a custom tablecloth or make one yourself, use a tablecloth that's slightly larger than your measurements.A larger tablecloth will hang lower, while a smaller one will not cover the entire table. As with any fabric, tablecloths can shrink when washed, potentially becoming up to 10 cm smaller over time.A rectangular "runner" cloth that runs across the center of a rectangular table without covering the full width is an alternative option.
Step 7: To measure the diameter of the table, use a tape measure.
The diameter of a circular object is the distance from one edge to the other in a straight line. You can estimate the center of the tablecloth by looking at it.If you want to be more precise, you can calculate the average of your results by starting at several positions. If you want a tablecloth that sits entirely on top of the table, you should use the more precise method. If each edge of the table is of equal size, this method may be used for hexagonal tables.
Step 8: Do you want a lot of overhang from your tablecloth?
An overhang of at least 6 inches (15 cm) is appropriate for most purposes. The table may look too small if the tablecloth is shorter. For more formal occasions or tables that don't have chairs under them, you can extend the drop length all the way to the ground.Measure the height difference between the chairs and the table to find out the maximum drop length that avoids piles of cloth gathering on chairs when they are pushed in.
Step 9: Determine the diameter of the tablecloth.
To account for the fact that the cloth needs to hang over either side of the table, multiply your desired overhang or drop length by two.To get the ideal diameter for your table, add this result to the diameter you measured it for.
Step 10: If you can't find a tablecloth in that size, consider other options.
If you don't want to make your own round tablecloth, try to find one that's a couple inches larger, since that is less likely to cause problems than a smaller tablecloth.A square tablecloth can be hung on a round table.Determine the diagonal length of the square or follow the manufacturer's recommended size for a round table. The ideal diameter should be equal to this length.
